This large and amazing magic poster from the 1920’s era, fetaures Carter the Great Magician, is from the 1920’s era. It is all original! This is a period print and not a later reprint or a modern copy. The theme of the poster was the featured act called Cheating The Gallows. This poster shows a ghost like portrait of Carter as well as his spirit leaving the magicians enshrouded body, hanging from the gallows. Along the bottom it reads “Carter condemned to death for witchcraft, cheats the gallows”. Like his other posters from that era, this beautiful and vibrant color stone lithograph poster was produced by the Otis Lithograph Company in Cleveland Ohio.
Charles Joseph Carter (1874-1936) Born in New Castle Pennsylvanian, Carter was fascinated by magic at an early age. He later became one of the most popular magicians during the Golden Age of Magic (1880-1930). His success allowed him to perform around the world as well as the United States.
The Carter The Great Magician poster is an original antique poster from the period. It was never used, so the condition is exceptional. That’s correct, never displayed, mounted or framed. The colors are bold and bright, just like the day it was printed. This is an 8 sheet poster that consist of four thin paper panels. Each panel is in their original folded format. The poster came from a private collection and has been stored in its original state since the beginning. A truly great find!
