Approaching The Holland Tunnel is a painting by Nik Puspurica. It captures the artist memories of his early years of living in New York City. The full title of the painting, is written on the reverse in paint, in the artist hand.
This marvelous painting shows the flow of cars as the enter the Holland Tunnel, bound for the metropolitan city of New York. As you can see by the style of the cars, the artist is letting us know that even in the 1940’s and 50’s, the traffic flooded into the city daily. The ghostly images of the cars, give us the sense of motion and the hurried pace, as the travel into the tunnel.
On the horizon you can see the Hudson River and a large ship as it sails over the iconic tunnel. In the shadowy background, we can see the ever growing skyline of this famous city. Once again the artist is sharing his past with us, by painting a dreamy cityscape with subtle forms and shapes of buildings. During this time, New York City and surrounding areas were filled with industrial and manufacturing facilities. This left a hazy and muted appearance, as you viewed the approaching city. I think the artist gave us a wonderful glimpse of what he experienced, when he lived in the city.
