Jerry Bywaters and Otis Dozier painting by Nik Puspurica is a remembrance of the two well known Texas artist, that he knew when he lived in Dallas. Both Bywaters and Dozier taught at Southern Methodist University, where Nik attended in the early 1950’s. This is most likely where he met both of the artist. Nik was also showing his work in various Texas museum exhibitions during this time. From 1949 to 1954 he exhibited several times at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, which Jerry Bywaters was director from 1943 to 1964.
Jerry Bywaters (1906–1989) was an American artist, university professor, museum director, art critic and one of the founders of a group of artists know as the Dallas Nine.
Otis Dozier (1904-1987) was an American artist, painter, print-maker, and teacher and also a prominent a member of the Dallas Nine.
Although the artwork was done around 2010, the title of the painting is Jerry Bywaters and Otis Dozier, late 1940’s. This is written on the reverse of the painting in the artist hand. The painting features both artist, along with Southern Methodist Universities Dallas Hall in the foreground. In the background you can see the iconic Mobil Red Horse from the Magnolia Petroleum building and the tower of the Mercantile Bank building, both located in downtown Dallas.
